Meet the team

We pride ourselves on the excellence and experience of our instructors

Our team of instructors are highly qualified and experienced and are all certified under the auspices of Polestar Pilates Education. Most have degrees in human movement, physiotherapy or dance and are part of the Polestar Pilates mentor team. All of the instructors continue to train and on a regular basis take continuing education courses to update their teaching skills.

The instructors are selected for their professionalism, reliability, motivation and their ability to customise a workout for the clients' specific needs and goals. The Pilates Body Studio's innovative and proven training methods as well as frequent reviews ensure that the staff is more than capable of providing the best quality of Pilates available.

Matthew Smith

Matthew started his training as a Pilates teacher at the Pilates Body Studio in 1997.

He has spent the last 15 years in Europe and has taught Pilates at P.A.R.T.S, which is the school of renowned Belgium Dance Company Rosas, and at the Pilates Academy in the heart of Vienna.  

He is back in NZ now and we are very grateful that he is teaching once more at our studio.

Prior to leaving NZ, Matthew was working as a dancer with Human Garden, Commotion Company, Touch Compass and Blue Vault. He was also a company member of Black Grace.

In Europe he worked as a dance teacher, performer and maker.

He is half way through his Osteopathic Studies.


Emily Adams 

Emily currently works as a Pilates instructor, Contemporary Dance artist and Dance teacher.

She fell in love with Pilates at the age of 17 where it was introduced to her during full time dance training. Since then Pilates has been a constant in her life, a regular practice, as it not only enhanced her dancing but her overall well being. 

She is qualified in Polestar Mat and is soon to sit the Studio exam. 

She considers it a privilege to share her passion for Pilates with others and is excited to be a part of the Body Studio Family. 

During 2016 Emily has been very busy with dance performances which have all been received extremely well by the public.

Penny Metcalfe

Looking for different opportunities within the health and fitness industry, Penny was introduced to Pilates in 2008. She began training, then teaching mat classes in Napier and Havelock North after being involved in sports administration and fitness facility management.

Penny's passion for Pilates and teaching led her to develop her skills further and in 2012 she became Studio certified with Polestar Pilates. She also gained certification in Xtend Barre and Xtend Stick in 2013 attending the first course in New Zealand.

Penny loves passing on her enthusiasm for Pilates and movement. She enjoys seeing her clients achieve results, making them feel comfortable and happy both within themselves and in the exercise environment, whilst becoming more aware of mind/body changes.

As a mother of three children Penny knows first-hand the benefits Pilates can bring to building both physical and mental strength!


Caroline Gray

Caroline was first introduced to Pilates in 2006 at her ballet school in Wellington. Pilates helped Caroline to keep her body centered and strong, and consequently became an integral part of her daily life.

In 2008, Caroline graduated from the New Zealand School of Dance and then went on to complete her Bachelor of Performing and Screen Arts majoring in Contemporary Dance. She has enjoyed working with some of New Zealand’s leading choreographers and dance companies and has also worked freelance in London as a dancer and performer. 

After experiencing the benefits of Pilates first hand throughout her professional dancing years, Caroline now feels highly motivated about encouraging people to practice Pilates.

Caroline completed her Studio instructor training with Polestar Pilates in 2014 and values continuing education very highly. 

Caroline feels extremely passionate about educating people through movement of the body and loves seeing her client’s confidence grow as they learn new things. Whether it is strength, conditioning or injury rehabilitation she anticipates helping people achieve their goals in the studio.

Brianna Figueroa

Brianna (Bri to her friends) is a recent graduate of Rutgers University, The State University of New Jersey, USA, with a Bachelor of Fine Art in Dance. She is currently completing her Internship for her Polestar Pilates Teacher Training with Polestar New Zealand.

Bri has traveled extensively, including a year of study abroad in London. 

She uses her movement background to facilitate her Pilates teaching practice by teaching through the scope of codified dance training.

Bri is available for group and private classes that connect Pilates to her extensive dance training, specifically the Graham technique in regards to the use of the spine and breath.

Teaching through this scope, she aims to create classes that tackle exactly what a client wants while also giving exercises that match what their body needs and is capable of.
